It happened on Saturday morning, while I walked around
Bonclarken Lake across from my home here in the North Carolina
mountains. It was a bright, brisk and beautiful spring morning,
with an edge in the air I could almost taste and could certainly
feel.

It started innocently enough with my walking with my
Aussie/Border Collie mix dog, Lady, reciting my “purposeful
prayer.” But then it happened. Suddenly I found myself giving
thanks to, well everything. To life, to love, to the love of my
wife, Ann, and my daughter, Amber. To having a job where on a
fairly regular basis I have the opportunity to make a
significant difference in someone’s life, and on more than a few
rare occasions even a profound difference. To the incredibly
beautiful, colorful, sensory enriched world in which we live.

The list went on and on, and the more I counted my blessings the
more purposeful, passionate and playful I felt. What a way to
start off the day. What a moment. What a life.

That’s it from Flat Rock NC where it’s another beautiful day in
Paradise.

This article is all about how to lose weight, I hope you find it interesting to read and beneficial. I am somebody who has always struggled to keep off the fat and who has tried many different forms of diet.

From about the age of twelve, I have had problems with my weight. I have to be careful what I eat and I personally believe I actually eat less than what other people do. One of the issues I do have though is that I like the wrong types of food. Vegetables, fruit, salad and pasta do not really do it for me, where as fast foods such as pizza, chips and curry do.

Another one of my bad habits is that from the age of around sixteen I started to get a taste and a liking for alcohol. I have to admit that from this age I have always drank far too much and far more than the average man. You may well be thinking at this point that it is was no wonder that I have had problems controlling my weight.

In my defence, I have had many confidence issues and suffered with a low self-esteem for many years. This would cause me to binge drink and comfort eat. When hungover I would eat copius amounts of these fatty foods to make me feel better.

By the age of twenty-two I was basically very fat or obese. I decided at this stage of my life to do something about this and started looking into various forms of diet.

Maybe it is just me but these weight loss programs seemed very harsh and very unrealistic. Drinking taste-less milkshakes four times a day, eating five fruits a day and not being able to drink alcohol, no thanks. Following these diets would make my life not really worth living and I knew that I would not be able to stick to them.

One morning I saw three different postmen delivering their rounds. They were all quite thin, at a weight I would love to be. Over the next few weeks I kept an eye out for other postmen and realised that the ones I had observed were all thin. I thought about why would this be, quite simply because they do a lot of exercise via walking.

I sat myself down and started to think. I had to admit to myself that I do very little exercise and I use my car to take me to virtually every place I go.

The answer was quite simple, I need to, at times walk my children to school, walk to my friends and in general ensure I exercise far much more than I was.

This has, I am happy to report helped my tremendously and I now have a weight I am happy with.

Bulgaria is currently the European property investment hotspot. Prices are rising steadily at 30% per annum and are expected to leap forward when the country becomes a full member of the EU in 2007.

Bulgaria is a truly remarkable country with a varied terrain. Not only can it offer city, coastal, mountain and rural properties but the vast amount of real estate that is available to buy, also comes with prices that will fit into everybody’s budget.

Coastal properties.

The waters of the Black Sea are actually warmer than those of the along the Spanish mainland throughout the summer months. Popular investment locations are Sunny Beach, Golden Sands and Varna. Up and coming destinations include Nessebar St. Vlas and Balchik.

The developments that are on offer are predominantly designed as seaside holiday apartments. However there is also now a fast-growing golfing market that is being catered for with new developments either in construction or planned. Nonetheless, detached properties with acres of land are readily available for less than £10,000.

Mountain and skiing real estate.

Bulgaria has three main ski resorts. Borovetz, and Bansko and Pamporovo. The ski season is the longest in mainland Europe. From an investment point of view, the mountaini resorts probably offer the best opportunity for a huge capital gains. The mountains only offer a small, defined area for the development. Once all the available land is built upon, all the existing properties will attract the highest premiums.

Much more informal than other European ski destinations, the Bulgarian resorts offer real value for money. Skiers and snowboarders, appalled by the exorbitant prices charged, especially in France or Austria, will be pleasantly surprised by the ridiculously cheap prices, in all the Balkan resorts. A pint of beer is around 80p and a three- course dinner with a bottle of wine is under six pounds.

The properties available also echo the fantastic value for money, at 60-70% cheaper than other European equivalents. Studio apartments are readily available for less than £30,000 as are two-bedroom apartments in the £60-£80,000 region. The ski season for 2006/2007 is already 75% booked and for those owning property, rental income is virtually assured.

In conclusion, Bulgaria offers a viable investment alternative for everybody. Even with the meanest budget of under £10,000, a fast appreciating property can be bought. For those looking to build an expansive portfolio, all the regions offer fantastic value for money and will return considerable capital gains over the coming years.

The use of the fuel known as biodiesel is growing in America–quite literally. Biodiesel is produced by combining organic oils, from any of a number of sources, with alcohol or petroleum diesel fuel. The organic oil is most often obtained from soybeans, but many other plants have shown potential, including canola and rapeseed.

Biodiesel can even be made at home. In fact, Biodiesel America tells its members that they can make biodiesel for as little as 50 cents a gallon using recycled cooking oil, assuming the oil if free. That may seem unrealistic, but there are many vehicles on the road today that use biodiesel fuel based on free oil from restaurants. Since restaurants generally have to pay to dispose of their used grease, they’re often willing to give it to a vehicle owner who wants to take it off their hands. Otherwise, they often have to pay as much as $150 per 50-gallon drum to have used grease hauled away.

Biodiesel America has a lofty goal of converting 100,000 school buses to run on biodiesel by the year 2010. The purpose of their project is not only to significantly lessen America’s fuel dependence on foreign countries, but they also are determined to lessen greenhouse gas emission, as well. According to the National Biodiesel Board, the amount of carbon monoxide emitted from a biodiesel engine averages 48 percent less than a similar engine running of “regular” diesel. Therefore, converting 100,000 school buses would represent a significant reduction in pollution.

Much of the raw material for biodiesel comes from Midwestern soybeans. It’s not uncommon in the Midwest to see pumps that sell biodiesel right alongside other fossil fuels. Renewable fuel has proven to be a newfound way for farmers to sell their crops, which will allow more farmers to stay on the land, which is an important side benefit to the overall biodiesel production process.

However, soybeans aren’t the only crops that may have important uses in the creation of biodiesel. Scientists at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks have been experimenting with the use of canola oil in creating biodiesel, and have had promising success. An important added benefit to using canola is that the plant will not only grow in Alaska, but the added amount of daylight available during Alaska summers creates a canola that contains a significantly higher oil content than when its grown on the mainland of the United States. That means Alaska could grow its own biodiesel plant components, lowering shipping costs and increasing efficiency.

Holiday weight gain is not a mandate from Santa’s elves…really.
Although “Season’s Eatings” seems a more apropos salutation this time
of year, it is possible to enjoy yourself and avoid putting on surplus
pounds. The average person gains seven pounds between
Thanksgiving and New Year’s, but you don’t have to. By becoming very
aware of your own holiday indulgence tendencies, you can then create
a detailed plan to support your weight management goals. When it
comes to holiday weight gain, an ounce of prevention is worth 7 pounds
of New Year’s-Resolution cure.

The two main strategies to use to avoid gaining extra weight over the
holiday’s are 1) Become Selective and, 2) Have a Plan. These
strategies have a general application as well as specific influence on
challenges like parties and family get-togethers. However great your
plan is, it is less than worthless if you don’t stick to it. Be clear with your
motivations to set the goal. Consider that by adhering to 2,000 calories a
day rather than 4,000, you will go a long way in avoiding the 25,000
extra calories that is seven pounds.

Creating Your Plan - The first part of your plan has to be about
setting some ground rules…

  1. Eat when you are hungry, not to comfort yourself emotionally.
    Acknowledge and plan for the paradox of holiday expectations versus
    disappointment and loneliness as well as both the joy and conflict family
    reunions can bring. Take steps to nurture and care for yourself in
    definite (and non-edible) ways.
  2. Plan as many social activities that you can that are not food
    oriented. Consider skating, sledding, caroling, or crafting. Winter nature
    walks, playing board games, and musical jam sessions are other ideas
    to play with.
  3. Keep your meal schedule on track. Even if your meals are richer
    than usual now and then, keep your meal times regular and you will be
    better off. Whatever you do, do not skip meals to compensate. This
    almost always backfires, producing more cravings, and lowered
    resistance to temptation later on. You will be much more successful if
    you eat a light and nutritious breakfast and lunch the day of a social
    event. Keep well stocked up on low-fat nutritious snacks and munchies
    at home.
  4. Eat slowly and savor your food. Bring your attention to your
    eating…become mindful. Pay attention to your body while you are
    eating. Notice whether you are feeling nervous or tense or thirsty.
    Determine if you are truly hungry and want to eat.
  5. The remainder of your plan is built on your choices after you engage the
    second strategy: Become Selective.

  6. Decide which occasions and foods are really special to you and
    plan those into your holiday schedule. Attend only the parties and eat
    only the foods that are most important to the tradition of the holidays.
    You can eat a handful of cocktail peanuts or chocolate chip cookies
    anytime, seek out the distinctive holiday treats and invest your calories
    for maximum pleasure.
  7. Sample, don’t gorge. The enjoyment of tasting foods comes in the
    first few bites. Savor the flavors and the company. Make a two-bite rule,
    and if you begin to get caught up in eating, take a tour of the house, step
    outside for a few minutes, or strike up conversation at the opposite side
    of the room.
  8. Planning for Parties - In addition to the previous points,
    parties call for specific selections and plans. Revisit the strategy of
    deciding in advance what you will and will not eat. Remember not to
    skip meals beforehand and if possible, to eat something light and
    nourishing, like soup, right before the party.

    • Limit your enjoyment of alcoholic drinks. Not only are they
      calorie dense, but alcohol will also weaken your clarity and resolve to
      maintain your plan.
    • Position yourself away from the buffet table,
      visit with people who are not eating, and cover your plate with your
      napkin when you are through.
    • Fill your plate up really full of
      healthy foods like vegetables, salad greens, fruits and slices of lean
      meat.
    • Finally, be polite, not nice. Rehearse ahead of time how
      you gracefully will say “no” to offers of homemade foods you really don’t
      want to eat.

Becoming more aware of your holiday celebration characteristics, you
can create a plan that maximizes your strengths and minimizes your
weaknesses. Managing your weight during the holidays is not without
hope or doomed to deprivation. Avoiding the ‘holiday seven’ can be as
simple as embracing these seven simple tips. Create holiday mirth
without the extra girth this year.

As a basis for meals and menu planning, refer to the pyramid information mentioned earlier to make sure you have the basic food requirements met for all family members. Then cross check and plan by looking over basic food categories to target healthy foods to fit the lifestyles and health of everyone. For example, if someone has depression, add some foods mentioned above to his or her dietary plans that aid in the healing and prevention of depression.

Meal planning also depends upon several factors like the number of people eating, meal times, special dietary concerns, budget, available foods, recipes on hand and likes and dislikes of everyone who will be eating. Begin by choosing foods and recipes that you like and know how to prepare well and that fit into everyone•s dietary plans. If one or more people have special needs, like diabetics, plan ahead for substitutions either in the food preparation or food substitution for that individual or for those individuals.

There are a few things to note when making meal choices and menu planning. First, some foods may be advertised a certain way, but that doesn•t mean you can•t experiment. For instance, eggs and sausage can be served for dinner, not just breakfast. And waffles can be made from healthy wheat grains and eaten for lunch with fresh fruits instead of sugary syrup and heavy butter for breakfast.

An old saying, ‘Haste makes waste” might apply if you see a great buy, purchase multiple items, then let them become outdated and have to toss them out.

One fun way to save is by trading coupons and working out food deals with friends, family, neighbors, your church group and anyone else who•d like to join in. Food cooperatives and farm markets available in your area may offer special pricing to groups or large purchases. So team up for better purchasing power and split everything up between group members. If you•re not into that much organization, go one-on-one with a neighbor, other friend or relative. Buy a huge bag of potatoes, onions, oats, and / or other foods, then share.

Here is one special item to note with regards to dietary planning. It•s unfortunate, but fast foods, especially those that are high in fat content (fried, greasy foods), are often cheaper than good, healthy food choices. For example, lean beef costs more than high-fat beef; cereals high in nutritional value are often priced much higher than the low-cost, sugary brand names. And low income and homeless people are particularly victims of this situation, many times needing to turn to the less healthier food choices for survival. So whenever possible, your plans might want to include donating a portion to homeless shelters and churches who would probably be more than willing to take extras off your hands.
