The Low Down On Worms

We all know that plastic worms are one of the most productive lures there are, but did you know certain worms have special uses? I have a whole tackle box with nothing but plastic worms in it, hundreds of them!

Here is what I use a certain worm for:

Floating Worm…I use this worm in shallow water and mainly in the spring. I use no weight whatsoever and like to use it when the fish just start thinking about spawning.

Stick Worm…..I use this worm in 60-70 degree water. If you use it whacky style it will vibrate on both ends.

Paddle Tail…..This is one of my favorite shallow water lures. When I fish vegetation I use long casts and just reel it back in slowly.

Gator Tail…This is also a shallow water worm that I use in the summer. It’s also great on streams and rivers.

Curly Tail….I use this worm in the summer around stumps, docks, timber, lily pads and it’s one of my favorite when I fish deep water to 20 feet.

Straight Tail…This is one of my favorites for docks, timber and brush. I have found it doesn’t wrap around brush like most worms do.

French Fry….I always carolina rig a french fry and use it in clearer water. The action of this is amazing when you move your line and the weight comes up the line.

Ribbon Tail…I read about 30 years ago of people fishing with a 10 inch ribbontail at night. I’m here to tell you this works, I have caught some nice bass on a big ribbontail. I use a regular ribbontail when fishing 10-15 feet of water too.

If you like to worm fish now, try some of the types of worms above for specific conditions. I think you’ll like the results.

Charles E. White has fished for bass for almost 50 years. He has fished from
Florida to California and has caught more than 6,000 bass in his lifetime. His
biggest bass is 12 pounds 14 ounces.

Charles has owned two tackle stores in his lifetime and taught dozens of people to fish for bass.

Author Clinton J Veasey discusses where to get the correct freshwater tackle

A lot of people enjoy fishing trips each and every year and it’s not surprising given that fishing is such a popular hobby and sport. One of the most important purchases for this hobby is your tackle. There are a range of options available online as well as in stores throughout the UK.

If you’re interested in buying carp tackle then there will be a few things that you’ll need to think about before you go shopping. Firstly, you’ll need to consider a budget for your purchases and it’s actually easier than you may have first thought, to work out how much you’ll need to spend.

Go to your favourite search engine, whether it’s Google or somewhere else, and type in products that you’re looking for. You should also have a pen and paper with you so that you can write down the prices as you go. Once you have a list of prices you should easily be able to work out a realistic budget.

Make a note of offers and deals as you browse the web and make sure that you keep an eye on the quality of products. You want to ensure that you don’t opt for the cheapest price without considering quality. If you do this, you could end up with low quality products that won’t last you very long.

It’s sometimes a good idea to head into your local fishing store to see what they have to offer. However, only do this when you’ve seen carp tackle online and you’re aware of what the good deals should look like. Also, make sure that you bear quality in mind.

Buying online will give you access to a larger range of products and should help you see a huge range of options compared to simply looking in one store. Usually, the best deals are available online so you should definitely prioritise your shopping to the online market.

Overall, as long as you do your research, buying carp tackle should be easy. It’s simple to find offers online but you’ll have to ensure that you keep your wits about you and look out for deals that could be too good to be true. Keep a pen and paper with you when you’re browsing online so that you can make a note of the offer that you like the look of.

My journeys thus far have led me down many paths and with many anglers across
this great land of ours. One person that comes to mind is a man named Ed Pease. Ed
is 77 years young to date and still going strong. He makes his way to Alaska each
fall in pursuit of Rainbows and Silver Salmon. I met Ed personally after seeing him
casting a fly into one of his favorite runs. It was depicted in a watercolor hanging on
the wall of Gigglewood Lakeside Inn, a Bed and Breakfast where I was staying the
summer. Linda, the owner of the B&B informed me that the man in the painting
would be up to fish in August and that I should meet him. So I did.

I was fishing a rather large creek that just happened to be the one in the painting. I
wasn’t having much luck when I noticed some anglers wading toward me from
upstream. The nearest angler turned to work the pool above me and it was then that
I realized it had to be the man in the painting. I later learned it was the very pool
that was rendered in the watercolor.

Ed is a lifelong angler, although far from a young man, Ed pursues his passion
relentlessly. Four to five weeks each fall you can find Ed angling Alaska’s rivers and
lakes in search of something but few will ever understand many are still searching.
Whether the drift of the fly, the flowing water of the river or the strike of a Silver
Salmon as it leaps from the depths of a well known run or perhaps it’s the
camaraderie found among friends at 3 am as we all joke about bears about as we
embark on a mile long journey, in the dark, down an even darker path along a
salmon choked river or creek.

Ed walks the trail alone as he is let out while the boy’s park the truck. You can see
Ed’s hat glisten as the headlights pan across the many flies that adorn it. One might
stock their fly box with the flies that drop from Ed’s hat along that trail and if the
lucky recipient actually tied one of the colorful flies they will find that the fly is not
just pretty but effective as well. As for me I tend to leave the flies where they lay just
in case its Ed’s way of getting back to the truck.

Only Ed can say for sure what it is that motivates him into such pursuits that are far
from easy for any man. Rising at 2 a.m. in order to beat the crowds after fishing till
late the night before. Then trekking a mile or more to the hot spots on a bum hip
and landing as many, if not more, big fish than the rest of us. You should try
catching several Silver Salmon in rapid succession in a swift current. Fun for sure,
tiring for surer.

Many may wonder what the lifelong angler sees in such pursuits but I assure you
that the lifelong anglers of the world know exactly for which they are searching
because they have already found it. Explaining the feeling or reasoning is usually
futile at best and many, myself included, have grown weary of trying to describe the
indescribable.

I have been informed on many occasions that as you grow older your passions
change and your priorities get shuffled. My response is that if the fueling of my fire
for hunting and fishing ended today it would take more than my lifetime for the fire
to go out.

Last season Ed was hand lining for striped bass in the Atlantic Ocean! That’s right,
he was pulling 10 to 30 pound striped bass in with his hands while trolling off the
coast of Massachusetts. This year who knows? It is the lifelong anglers such as Ed
that give me hope that my passions be as strong in the future as they are now and
that at age 77 I too can still get to the hot spots and cast a fly to a stubborn Coho
and be able to land that Coho when I hook him.

Ed said last year it might be his last trip to Alaska. He was promptly reminded that
he had made that statement for at least five seasons before and every season since.
I feel as long as the passion is there Ed will be landing Coho and tying god-awful
flies that actually catch fish. It seems that the passion, in so many anglers around
the world, is much stronger than aching muscles and joints and the only time the
pain subsides is on the water with rod in hand and a fish on the line. I hope to see
Ed again on stream where we can compare flies and tall tales and enjoy a passion
that hopefully will continue in the hearts of many well past any of our time here on
earth. To Ed Pease of Massachusetts we salute you as a Lifelong angler and unsung
hero to our cause and thanks for sharing the clear water.

A catamaran sailing charter is the best option to choose when you want to take a sailing vacation. This is because this type of boat has the most room of all so that you can enjoy your sailing experience to the fullest. A typical catamaran sailing yacht has 4 private double cabins, plus 2 more for the captain and the crew. If you are chartering the catamaran and handling the sailing yourself, these extra cabins could be for the children. A catamaran sailing charter is an excellent idea for a family vacation where all the family can be together all the time.

Some of the amenities you can enjoy with a catamaran sailing charter include cooling fans in the cabin and the salon. There are also fresh water transom showers so you won’t have to bathe in salt water on your catamaran sailing vacation. The electronics on board the catamaran include a GPS, a CD player and a VHF radio. You don’t have to do without cold food because catamaran sailing vacations have a refrigerator and beverage cooler on the yachts, as well as a barbeque and a microwave. Enjoy all the comforts of home as you are sailing along.

When you choose a catamaran sailing vacation, you will have a spacious deck where you can sunbathe, use as a diving platform or just sit and chat. The cockpit of the catamaran sailing charter is also quite spacious and has a table where you can sit and enjoy the scenery on days when the weather doesn’t allow you to spend time outdoors. From the seat on the helm you have a view of all parts of the deck when you are docking if you are operating the catamaran on your own.

The oversized main salon of a catamaran has ample room for all members of your group to be seated comfortably. There are huge windows that give you a 360 view to help you make the most of a catamaran sailing vacation. If there is a lot of sun, you don’t have to be uncomfortable inside, because with a catamaran sailing charter the overhanging top of the cabin provides shade from the sun as well as cooling down the interior. When you book one of the catamaran sailing vacations, the charter company will make sure you understand how to use the navigation charts before you depart.

When it is your turn to cook on your catamaran sailing charter, you can still be part of all the action with the way the galley is designed. The galley is located on the starboard side of the catamaran and the gallery area is an open space. You can cook and talk to everyone else at the same time. Along with a three - burner stove and an over, you have ample storage space for all your food supplies. For the sleeping arrangements, a catamaran sailing charter provides you with queen-sized berths, each with its private bathroom.

There is such an assortment of bait that it is difficult to recommend any particular color, size, or type as the best. There are more than a thousand good baits on the market. All will catch fish at some time or another.

Fishing baits usually weigh from to an ounce to three ounces. The most popular weight preferred by the majority of bait casters is the 5/8-ounce bait, while the average is between and 3 quarters of an ounce. Baits can either be used as a whole or cut into chunks. Anglers can also use dead or live baits.

The Different Types of Bait

There is a wide array of organisms being used as fishing baits. Among the different types used in fishing, the commonly used are the small fishes. These consist of widely used fishing baits such as herring, anchovies, menhaden, and some others that are inborn to certain local waters. Larger fishes are usually used as chunk baits.

Fishing baits can be used whole, chunk, and strips, based on the activities of the type of fishes being chased. The size of the fishing bait is usually well matched with the size of the fish being hunted. Other common organisms used for bait fishing are crabs, worms, shrimps, crabs, clams, sand fleas, eels, and squid. Among all of the organisms mentioned, the crabs and the shrimps are the well-liked organisms to be used as fishing baits.

Shrimp are favorably used as fishing bait and are considered to be very valuable bait for a huge number of saltwater fish, especially those that are considered “inshore fish” like redfish, speckled trout, shook, and a lot more.

Whereas, various crab species, especially the fiddler crab, sand flea, and the blue crab, are perfect fishing baits for many varieties of “inshore fishes” and “bottom fish.” These crabs are usually clasped through their shell, usually on either the right or left of the head.

How to Acquire Fishing Bait?

Fishermen can acquire fishing bait either buying them in bait shops or simply by capturing it themselves.

The advantage of buying fishing bait is convenience, while catching live fishing bait is less expensive and can be more effective in luring fish. Digging for earthworms is another activity. Earthworms make an excellent bait.

Indeed, when it comes to bait fishing, using the proper fishing bait are important and imperative to the success of fishing. Hence, anglers should know the basics of choosing fishing baits in order to save time and money.

Why do we do it? Some people come to party. For some of us it is definitely the need, or desire, for the meat of the salmon itself. Others pursue them for the challenge of catching one using various types of bait and tackle. Another type of fishermanuses the pursuit of the fall salmon as an excuse to be in the fall outdoors with the fresh air; the beautiful scenery; and close friends and family.
The first type of fisherman is usually outfitted with heavy rods, line, hooks, booze, and sometimes fireworks; and can usually be found fishing below the dam at all hours of the day and night. They setup their “camp” with lanterns and inflatable rafts for their gear. I rarely see them leave the river, even the ones who bring a large amount of beer as part of the gear. I guess they either hold it in or fall in the river to clean out their waders. After having filled my waders with river water twice this year, due to stupid missteps, I have no desire to do it myself, but I guess if your drunk enough the temperature won’t bother you. And yes, I did say fireworks, it wasn’t a typo. I saw it myself this year complete with “oohs” and “aahs.” What can I say; these people are there to party.
The second type of fisherman is outfitted similarly to the first type, with the exception of the booze. They usually shake their heads at the party animals and mutter under their breath. You can sometimes see the two groups clash at the dam when their lines entangle and each one tries to get the other to let out line. This usually results in someone screaming profanities as their line gets cut by the other guy.
The third type of fisherman is usually armed with lighter, more specialized gear. Some people fish with long spindly noodle rods and light line that is tipped with a small morsel of salmon eggs to entice the fish into biting when it really isn’t hungry. Some fish with various sizes of fly rods and use chuck-n-duck rigs tipped with spawn or flies; or fish wet flies or streamers. Yet others fish with spinning rods tipped with spinners, spoons, chuck-n-duck rigs, or float rigs tipped with spawn or jigs. Some of these people are actually targeting Steelhead that follow the Salmon up the rivers during their spawning run. You will probably start to see more Steelhead fisherman in the rivers as the fall progresses into winter. The other thing about this type of fisherman is that they often look for little known places to fish. That is what makes them so valuable to know.
The fourth type of fisherman can sometimes be confused with the third type, but there are some differences. The third type brings along equipment for comfort as well as fishing. They usually are accompanied by several other people and can be seen fishing in a group. They usually setup “camp” and have a few camp chairs, a small campfire made out of downed timber, maybe some marshmallows or hotdogs, and a few kids fishing. Don’t get me wrong, these people are here to fish, but they are also here to enjoy the outdoors and each other’s company. You can often spot them pausing with cameras to take pictures of the scenery and each other as they fish, because they are actually there after the memories more than the fish. This group also has the common desire with type three fishermen to get away from the large crowds by finding obscure spots to fish.
I guess you could say I fall into the last three categories. This year I have taken two trips so far. The first trip was a hardcore fishing trip with more time spent in the water than out and I had two fish as a result. My second trip was with family and was more about having a good time than fishing, although we did spend a great deal of time doing that. Sometimes it pays off as well; we found a spot that gave up a total of five fish for all the family, which is plenty for the year. If I can go again I think I will try to be the third type of fisherman and concentrate on perfecting one technique.
I guess there is room for all of us on the water in the fall as long as we are considerate. One disturbing trend is the yearly increase in the amount of trash near Tippy Dam and the other popular fishing spots. I’m beginning to think the DNR could make as much money, if not more, by handing out littering tickets instead of snagging tickets.

Class Is In Session…. Baitfish 101

Okay.

So you would think that in this information age we fishermen and fisherwomen would have all the knowledge of baitfishing at our fingertips.

Evidently, some of us have been slow to enter this information age, so as a public service I am going to pass along some rather “common sense” information that apparently isn’t being absorbed by the fishing world.

This information is being sent, with the hope that if 200 people read this article and then they tell 200 people and so on and so forth, maybe, just maybe enough people will get the message.

I have enlisted Professor R. O. Tenone, the famous expert on natural fish carnage, to explain the use of “live baitfish” and it’s effect on lakes and rivers. We join the professor midstream on his lecture…..

…….”Zo class, as you can zee ze Goldfish, why making a very nice pet for ze vindowzil and bringing zmiles to zee faces of zee many kids, makes a very poor choice when uzing it azz bait for catching zee big one!”

“Vy you ask?”

“Vell, if zee Goldfish zhould ezcape zee clutches of zee hook–zen der iz good chance he vill zurvive to dezzimate zee fishery he haz been released into!”

“Are zer any qvestions?”

“Yez–you zer vit zee plaid hat.”

“Professor, why are we talking about Goldfish? Are you actually telling us that people are using Goldfish as bait to catch fish?”

“Abzolutely. Goldfish, Chubbs, and Zquawfish are all ze prime examples of live baitfish that have turned vhat vas once prime trout vaters into vatery vastelands devoid of any vorthvhile fish.”

“That’s a lot of ‘V’s’ professor.

“Zat’s not zee point.”

“Zee point izz, ruining zee fishing of an entire lake just zo one individual can “hang zee big von” zeems a little zelfish–NOOO?”

“No–I mean yes–I mean is this a real problem?”

“Vell, I did not become zee expert on fish carnage vithout having first hand knowledge.”

“Oh, yeah–your the guy that has to use that natural “toxic to fish” poison that kills off all the fish in a lake so they can re-plant fish, so fishermen can fish for trout or something other than trashfish.”

“In zee matter of zpeaking.”

“I don’t conzider any fish trash, but I don’t zink it is natural to have zee giant Koi pond out in zee vild either.”

“Vhat–I mean What can we do?”

“Vell, first ve must educate zee fisherman zat zees fish are no good to use azz bait. Zpread zee vord in all zee fishing circles you know, vorms are o.k.,Rapalas vork vell, and of course zee flys, but no Goldfish!”

“I don’t know professor, seems like a pretty daunting task.”

“Fine, azz long azz you feel comfortable looking at zee grown men ztanding on zee cover of zee magazine holding zee mighty Goldfish–zen it iz o.k. vit me.”

“I guess that isn’t very impressive.”

“In zee conclusion, I am going to give zee link to zee story I read zat made me give zis class”

“Remember class, if zey have to call me–zen it is too late, and you know who pays ven Professor R.O. Tenone has to show up?”

“Uhhh, …let me see…. uhhh… the taxpayers?”

“Class dizmizzed.”
