If you’re like most people you’re looking to get the most out of a workout that you possibly can. However exercising to build endurance requires a different approach than exercising to lose weight. To get the most out of your workout you need to know what your Anaerobic Threshold or AT is.

Your AT rate is an individual number that varies from person to person, and can even change as your body becomes stronger over time. To better understand AT we need to take a look at your heart rate. Your heart is expressed in beats per minute, the maximum rate at which your heart can safely operate is known as your Maximum Heart Rate or MHR and is an average value taken over a few minutes. Originally your AT number was believed to be between 80 to 90 percent of your MHR. However since you were taking a percentage of an average the value was often inaccurate, and a more precise measurement was needed.

Professional athletes who need to know their AT undergo a series of tests. They ride a stationary bike or run on a treadmill. A mask was placed over their mouth to measure oxygen and carbon dioxide at different levels of exertion. The results are processed using computer programs and yield very precise results. These tests are costly and time consuming and not necessary for most people.

A less sophisticated method that is reasonably accurate is the talk test. You will need to take your pulse or use a digital pulse meter or watch. When you are jogging or using a stationary bike and you can talk normally without speaking in short burst you are in your aerobic metabolic zone. As you increase the intensity and you still talk but not as easily this is the lower edge of your AT zone, make a note of your heart rate. Pick up the pace again as your breathing becomes more rapid and talking becomes more difficult and you start to speak in short bursts this is the upper range of your AT. For best results perform this test a few times on different days and average the results.

Once you know your AT range here are tips to help you get the most out of your exercise routine. Exercising below your AT range will burn some fat, and will help you improve things like blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Exercising in your AT zone will give you the maximum fat burning benefit. You will use the most calories if you can spend most of the time that you exercise in this range. Exercising above your AT zone will boost your strength and endurance. The amount of fat you will be burning will be lower than if you were exercising at a lower AT level. People who exercise vigorously and have minimal fat loss are exercising above their AT level.

Once you know what your AT level is getting the most out of your workout is easy. You monitor your heart rate and adjust your intensity to raise or lower your heart rate keeping you in your desired range. People who exercise regularly should check their AT level every 6 to 9 months and make adjustments as needed.

Is the ‘I Feel Fat Day’ (IFFD) syndrome affecting your output? That extra flab can overpower you and your work. Thee feeling of being fat can morph into an emotion like ‘happy’ or ‘angry’. Days overpowered with that feeling have been designated as ‘I Feel Fat Day’ (IFFD). So don’t let your weight determine your mood.

How many times have you heard your colleague quipping, “I feel fat” or “It’s a fat day feeling?” Can’t fit into your favorite pair of jeans? How about a snide comment from a relative or colleague? That’s all it takes to turn an ordinary Monday or Tuesday into IFFD(I Feel Fat Day).

Perhaps just like the national celebrations, ‘fat’ is important enough to get a day named in its honour and it doesn’t just come one a year! Carrying extra pounds is necessary but not exclusive prerequisite to an IFFD. To have an IFFD, one must also carry an element of shame. A good IFFD is not complete without tears, self loathing and a frantic scramble for concealing clothes.

So, how to keep away ‘fat’ from becoming an emotion? Simple semantics: fat is fat. Don’t confuse it with the emotions so often attached to it, and recognize that shame and self-loathing are useless distractions. Neither of them will help you get closer to your goal. The way out is simple: instead of wasting time and psychic energy on IFFDs, we could use those special resources for the job at hand.

What Are They?

Anabolic steroids, also known as , gear, juice, and anabolics, are drugs that were initially created to mimic the male hormone testosterone. They are used in medical settings to treat such wasting diseases as cancer and AIDS, and to treat endocrine problems such as delayed puberty in males.
Bodybuilders and other athletes use them to promote muscle growth and decrease body fat percentages. As of 1990 the nonmedical use of these drugs is illegal.

Who uses them?

The simple answer to this question is that everyone uses these drugs. By this we mean members from every segment of society is represented. It started with Olympic lifters in the 1950’s and spread to bodybuilders in the 1960’s. From then on just about any sport that involved short bursts of power was infiltrated by the drugs. By the 1970’s and 1980’s there was an explosion in anabolic usage by the general public. It has now reached the point where everyone from teens and college athletes to non-competitive weekend warriors are on the gear. The biggest explosion in usage is not for improving athletic performance but for looking better. As soon as a Hollywood hunk reads in a script that he needs to remove his shirt on screen, out comes the pills or needles. The vast majority of people who use steroids will never compete.

How Are They Used?

Steroids are usually taken as orally as pills or injected with a needle into a muscle. Bodybuilders and other users routinely take dosages that are hundreds of times higher than the medically recommended dosages. Users often combine multiple anabolics into stacks, and alternate such usage with periods of abstinence called cycling. A typical stack will last 6 to 12 weeks and be followed by 2 to 4 weeks of non-usage. At least this is how the smart users do it. Now days many bodybuilders live on the edge by staying on high dosages of for years on end.

Do They Really Work?

Despite the lack of medical evidence to “prove” the point, it’s safe to say that steroids do promote tremendous gains in muscle strength and size. The anti-steroid advocates who say otherwise obviously don’t spend much time hanging out in gyms. It’s one thing to work with rats in a lab, but another thing entirely to use human subjects. Anabolics allow users to train harder and recover much quicker from workouts. The biggest detriment to training naturally is overtraining. But being on the juice modifies a person’s system so that overtraining is almost impossible. Perhaps the best evidence to “prove” that steroids work is that since the late 1950’s there have been millions of people who have used these drugs. If they didn’t work the usage would have died out decades ago.

Are there health hazards?

Although the side effects attributed the hormones have been exaggerated by the media, there are risks just the same. Most of the negative effects such as acne, oily skin, and increased blood pressure, are transitory and will disappear after the drugs are stopped. In women the effects of a deepened voice and masculinized genitalia may be permanent.

We should point out that the risk of side effects is related to the nature of drug usage. Users who take multiple drugs in high dosages for extended periods of time, are at greater risk for developing health problems than someone who does a one-drug, 6-week cycle. But thanks to modern nutritional science there is an alternative so that you don’t even need to try illegal products in the first place.

Alternatives?

When the Anabolic Steroid Control Act became law in the early 1990’s, steroid usage became a lot more dangerous. Not only was the risk of side effects still present, but now users had to contend with being busted for their habit. Even though many prisons have well-equipped weight rooms, we strongly urge you to give steroids a pass. You have options. They are called steroid alternatives and have taken the bodybuilding world by storm. They are safe, legal, and highly effective at packing huge amounts of striated muscle on your body. Now I’m not saying that just because you are female and have higher levels of estrogen you are doomed to gain weight. What I’m saying is that we can use what we have to our advantage. Regular weight training will build lean body mass. The more body lean body mass you acquire, the higher you raise your metabolism. An increased metabolism results in more calories burned per minute. Muscle vs. Fat

A statement I hear a lot is that muscle weighs more than fat. The fact of the matter is that a pound of muscle and a pound of fat weigh the same, a pound. A pound of muscle takes up less space than a pound of fat does. Muscle allows you to eat more food without getting fat because muscle is the only body material that is metabolically active. Once you put muscle on your body you will burn an additional twenty to thirty calories an hour. Bodybuilders actually burn fifty to seventy-five additional calories per hour.

Muscle Turns to Fat?

A misconception that I hear many women saying is that they don’t want to workout because if they stop the muscle will turn to fat. Now, let’s analyze this statement. People begin resistance training program in order to rid the body of fat, not to gain it. Muscle can’t turn into fat any more than fat can turn to muscle. Muscle (metabolically active) and fat (metabolically inactive) are two completely different tissues responsible for their own functions. Just as your heart and liver are two different organs performing completely different functions, the same goes for muscle and fat. Now I ask you, can your heart turn into your liver, or vise versa? If there were any truth to the above statement there would be a lot of people out there with great muscle potential, if you catch my drift.

An explanation to the above myth is that some bodybuilders do gain extra weight off-season in preparation for the up coming competitive season. Many veterans of bodybuilding gain weight when they get older or retire, how does that differ from the average American? There is a biological reason for the weight gain. The metabolism slows down as we age, meaning the body needs fewer calories per day to maintain itself. The downfall is that most people, including bodybuilders, don’t reduce their caloric intake to compensate for this slowdown and the end result is fat gain.

Another explanation is that bodybuilders, in hard training, develop enormous appetites and need the extra calories for muscle growth and repair. If the intake stays the same when training volume is reduced or ceased, the unburned calories get stored as fat; again, this is no different than the average American.

Stop Making Excuses

Simply put, stop making excuses. Not exercising is far more harmful to your body, image, and health than working out. Exercising and nutrition is a learned lifestyle, if you are not consistent with it you will decrease muscle and increase fat, but muscle definitely will never turn into fat.

For decades the Russian military and strong men were known to have strength of unparalleled per portions. Tales of men with Herculean type physiques and gorilla type strength were told throughout the world. What the western and the rest of the world fail to realize was that this strength and muscle wasn’t being developed in a conventional body building manner. There were no machines, Olympic bars or plates being used to achieve these physiques. So if they weren’t lifting weights how could they possibly achieve such unbelievable amounts of strength and muscle? The answer is simply kettle bells.

Kettle Bells look like a cast iron ball the size of a cannon ball and have a very thick metal handle. They come in sizes starting from 16 pounds and going up in range all the way to 72 pounds. Most of you bodybuilders reading right now are laughing at the minuscule weights I just mentioned. What can 72 pounds do for a man who can lift two, three or even four hundred pounds for some lifts? Your second questioned would be, why would I not just use a dumbbell? Those are both valid views but at the same time are quite incorrect. The feel and awkwardness (for lack of a better word) of a kettle bell is unlike anything most bodybuilders have ever felt. The leverage of the bell creates a totally different feel when compared to that of a dumbbell and the larger handle requires extra grip work in order to properly handle it. The single greatest advantage a kettle bell gives you above all other bodybuilding equipment is the ability to create hybrid exercises in order to hit your muscles in positions they have never been subjected to.

Most of the lifts that are tailored towards the use of kettle bells are the ones with an Olympic lift origin. Any serious bodybuilder should know the benefits of Olympic lifts for not only strength and coordination but also for mass building. There is no better way to add quality muscle onto your frame then hitting large muscle groups at the same time. When using kettle bells, regular lifts becoming quite challenging, due to the awkwardness of the bell and this difficulty results in more optimal training sessions. With the lack of stability the kettle bells offer, your body is forces to recruit more muscles to help stabilize the movements. Another excellent aspect of kettle bell training that is often overlooked is the ability to lose body fat quite rapidly. The caloric expenditure while doing a kettle bell workout when compared to any other lifting or cardiovascular routine is unparalleled.

Bodybuilding is a sport where any little edge one can find can be the difference between 1st place and last place.
