Science fiction and fantasy trace their roots back several thousand years to the Epic of Gilgamesh, but most modern scholars will tell you that what we now think of as science fiction and fantasy really began to take shape in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One of the most prolific and influential writers in the genre was Edgar Rice Burroughs, who penned dozens of novels that wove fantastic stories in imaginary landscapes with pseudo-scientific babble.

Burroughs’ writing style appealed to the male imagination, especially the young male imagination, but his heroes were cavalier, manly men who only believed in doing what was right and supporting the cause of Good against all evils. Some of ERB’s characters developed complex personalities and storylines, like Tarzan and the Outlaw of Torn. But some of his heroes, like John Carter, were just good, old-fashioned sword-swinging swashbucklers who led their merry readerships through animated landscapes and a milieu of ever-changing adventures.

Tarzan has been immortalized in film and television but John Carter has never quite made the transition. Not until this year, that is. Although you can certainly buy John Carter of Mars books to find out what all the fuss is about, you don’t have long to wait. The first film adaptation of John Carter — by The Asylum — will hit the Direct-to-DvD market in December 2009. But the movie that fans are really excited about is the 2012 Disney/Pixar collaboration starring Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins as John Carter and his beloved Dejah Thoris.

Information about the Disney John Carter of Mars movie has been slow to come out. We now know who the main cast members are (Willem Dafoe plays Carter’s giant, four-armed green friend Tars Tarkas) and where the movies will be shot (Utah). Yes: Movies. Disney and Pixar are apparently gearing up for a trilogy of John Carter movies.

Fan sites devote to John Carter of Mars are starting to appear on the Web. By 2012 there will probably be hundreds, perhaps thousands of such sites.

A long time ago when I was a child, I remember that all the canopy beds sheets in my house had to be white cotton ones. You are surprised at the range of unique bedding that are on offer today. Bedding was never so beautiful with the vibrant colours, prints and textures that are offered in bedding today

The following are some factors that matter a lot when you buy a bed sheet.

Measure the size of your bed

It is a common myth that one queen bed or king bed has the same dimensions which is so untrue. The top proportions might be the same, but again the measurings differ with each producer. So make sure that you calculate all the measurements of your bed from top to bottom, side to side and also the thickness of the mattress you are using. Often similar beds from the same brand are taller or wider than each other. When you have your beds dimensions with you, choosing a bed sheet is easier.

Zero down on the Bedding shop

You will find a lot of top names in bed linen available in a departmental shop near you. For a unique look, some people also go for embroidered bedding with sequins. Another choice is to shop online for the largest variety. For those who still love their cotton sheets, a discount rate storehouse is where you should travel to.

Do you know what is a thread count?

The amount of threads that are present in a square inch of the sheet in back and forth direction of its weave is known as thread count. The label of the bed sheet has the thread count printed on it. A luxurious grain calls for a higher thread count. Nonetheless do not go for a very high thread count as it implies the singular threads are thin and may not give the desired cozy feeling. For the right soft feel, a thread count of 175 - 300 is fine.

Choose the bedsheet cloth.

You need to choose such material for your which fits in your budget and is comfortable at the same time. Cotton sheets are still liked, but blended cotton is preferable by those who dont like lines. For a warm cocoon around you, flannel is best in winter. Those who wish a smooth sheet can go for satin or silk.

Bedsheet Care

You need to know how the bed sheet has to be cleaned prior to purchasing one. Silk sheets cannot be machine washed as they are delicate. Can you promise to do this? The best way is to buy comfortable sheets that can be machine washed.

I Hope these six steps lead you to finding a perfect bed sheet for your bed.

An active life can make it hard to squeeze in all the titles you might like to read. Long commutes to the office and day-to-day activities might take up large amounts of time without you seeing it. Your favourite pastimes get set to the side for more pressing tasks. It’s simple to simply utilize the time spent doing housework to catch up on novels you don’t have time to read. Using user-friendly media files, you can spoil yourself with He Comes Next by Ian Kerner by Download Audio Book Online, or audible books narrated by Benson Smith and Tony Rutigliano when you are busy doing other things.

Making the best of your day is becoming a way-of-life these days. Audible books like Pimsleur Swedish Compact by Dr. Paul Pimsleur by Download Audio Book Online make greater use of of the dead moments in our lives, it might be waiting time at the physician’s office or possibly driving the children to soccer practise. Audio-books are available to download as mp3 files these include Pimsleur Chinese (Cantonese) I Complete Course by Dr. Paul Pimsleur, so grab your mp3 player and use the opportunity to hear the latest biography, such as audiobooks by Clayborne Carson without carting heavy books around.

A further benefit of audible books is hiring or buying the book which interests you then enjoying it in your own time. Interested in studying German? Try audio-books! You can catch up on modern business trends, or you can enjoy contemplating the most groundbreaking beliefs about religion or spirituality.

A massive selection of genres and titles exist. It really doesn’t matter if you like natural history, nuts over love stories even interested in personal development, you can download most titles now. Numerous plans are available; you can take a subscription to a plan and rent or instead buy what appeals to you.

Reading fans will invariably find a place for reading, however audio books offer a handy option for busy individuals. Numerous stories, such as audio-books told by H. Rider Haggard, are even better when recounted by the author or a noted actor. Just reading a book is not quite the same experience as listening to an audio title narrated by Jim Cymbala, including the all the nuances established during a performance. Listening to audio titles narrated by Paulo Coelho can supply something extra to the title and frequently go much deeper the written word.

So next time in future should you think about purchasing a book that might collect dust on a shelf, don’t forget about an audio-book as another alternative.

Whenever you go in a library you are caught by the great bookcases that are home to a power plant of information- literature! books are safe and free from dirt and junk in a bookcase. Bookcases generally have flat compartments for keeping books. These bookshelves sometimes come with glass doors for favorable admittance to books.

Tell me about a barristers bookcase.

attorneys have to show from several reference manuals for their practice. such citation manuals cost alot and are needed often. Barristers bookcases are sturdy and hold good utility for a lawyer. They are also known as attorneys bookcases and can be built in oak wood, cherry wood in several coatings and glosses.

How did individuals store books when barrister bookcases did not exist?

Books were rare in the past, and therefore there was no want for a bookcase then. books in past years were hand-handwritten only. rich individuals who owned them stored them in accessible containers. This is because books were very costly and only wealthy families could afford to purchase them and carry them while travelling. Such boxes fulfilled the need for a bookcase.

Soon lot of religious manuscripts and other such books were bought by the wealthy society. Due to this, the books were placed in closets or on shelves. The bookshelves that we see Now are an offspring of these cupboards in the past, without the doors.

How were the books located in these shelves?

The old technique was unlike than what it is Today. books were stored with their bounds facing us and the covers to the wall. A band of vellum or leather was utilised for inscription of the title and also closed the book. the books edge showed its name and thats why they had to face outwards.

publishing was one conception that created books inexpensive. printing built it manageable to have the title on the back and edges presenting inside.

Such cases were made of what textiles?

Oak was the principal material in creating a barrister bookcase. there were other choices of maple, cherry and pine wood if you liked. A steel barrister bookcase is long-lasting and low on maintenance too. The Bodleian Library at Oxford University households the oldest bookcases. They are placed here since the sixteenth century.

The two major bookcase designers were Chippendale and Sheraton who built terrific bookcases glazed with tiny pills wrapped in latticework frames. Any room could look dressed with these bookcases.

How are the latest bookcases unique?

taking into account the number of times a barrister demands to move in a new office, a portable barrister bookcase is like a boon. this movable bookcase is made of several shelf units. all it takes to be a perfect barrister bookcase is an additional hood and footstall. This is genuinely movable as you dont demand to remove anything from the shelf to move it to different location!

A barrister bookcase is a traditional shelf that is believed to have originated in England. Its identifying feature is a pure field glass face. This glass face is hinged at the upper lip allowing someone to easily access ledgers and other collectibles plainly by lifting the glass door. A Barrister’s bookcase is ideal for a thousand things. Barrister bookcases were frequently used by lawyers since it was necessary for them to keep on moving. Nowadays, they are really convenient, peculiarly if one is always moving. This is because of the doors. This prevents them from having to be voided on moving

Oak Furniture
Exceptional Barrister’s Oak Book cases avert the use of the normal sideway opening doors . Instead they use doors with a unusual opening mechanism. A scissor device when used inside the barrister shelves ensure the moving doors do it in a parallel way without getting the doors jammed or skew in the procedure. One benefit of A barrister bookcase is the ability to have some of these units group together and have them secured to a wall. These bookcases give the feeling of an attractive cabinet. Depending on the preference of the owner, barrister bookcases can have a variety of material choices. Whether madeutilising glass or wood, these bookcases give a clean elgant show to a room.

Barrister bookcases however, despite their many merits, can be rather expensive. Luckily, there unqiueness has caused some producers to start making replica editions. Some modern versions are also available at very reasonable prices. Some editions have simple appearances and can be made to fit a particular style. They can also be made into customized at little cost. They can be stacked allowing them to be easily used to create creative unit placements. Some can be used to create ping pong tables, breakfronts or even breakfast tables.

Her Backyard by Doreen Lewis is an adventure, romance
novel that depicts a career woman in the middle of
self-discovery. It is about making choices that may not be so
easy to make and complex relationships between
co-workers, siblings and friends. I am certain that many
readers within the age group between 30 and 40 will find a
connection with Audrey, the main character.

Audrey and her sister Ava have a touching, close -
sometimes tense, other times humorous - relationship.
Their mother died when they were young and now they were
facing losing their beloved father. Audrey returns home for
the funeral and meets up with an old flame that helps her
come to terms with what is missing in her life. Office politics
were wearing thin and career hungry co-workers were
beginning to both irritate and consume her.

She begins to question her choices in life and is faced with
desirable options that play tug-of-war with her mind. Finally,
exhausted and emotionally wrought she is given the
opportunity to choose the path of content happiness. Audrey
learns to make a decision based upon her needs, rather
than trying to live up to the impossible lifestyle society
encourages.

Her Backyard definitely has a story line that I think many
women can relate with. Career women have to make many
sacrifices and there are times when one wonders if this
lifestyle is truly full filling all their needs. I think Doreen
Lewis has written a fine book portraying this conundrum.

Did you know that you already have an eBook inside you? And, like your coach, you can earn thousands of dollars each month?

Even if you are a non-techie like me, you can write your ebook at the same time you write your print book. Or, solve your readers’ problems using other articles and reports already in your files. Expand a two-page article with a story or add other how-to’s.

If you want to double and triple your present book income, check out these mistakes and correct them now.

Mistake 1. You don’t write a short e-Book first to test the waters.

Short is in the eyes of the beholder, but let’s say from 15-90 pages. Your future customers will be glad to download these pages and print only the ones they need to.

Your e-Book needs to be more concise, easy-to-read, and compelling than your print book. That means you can shorten your analogies and stories. You can use a “success format” that poses a question (a heading) your reader wants answered, then answer it. This formula gets to the point quickly, and always remember, your Online audience is busy and doesn’t want a wordy style.

Mistake 2. You don’t check in with a professional editor or book coach before you sell your e-Book.

Yes, it’s good to get feedback from peers, but you need to get a professional look at the final edition -someone who can set you straight about words and grammar that makes your writing vital and original. For instance, you need to drop your passive constructions such as “there is” or any form of “is, has, begin or start”. Limit the -ly adverbs that merely tell rather than show. Your readers want a picture and want to respond with their emotions. Limit your -ing forms of the verbs. Keep your copy in present or past tense.

Mistake 3. You don’t know your audience before you write your e-Book.

Emerging authors make this biggest mistake. They have information, so why not write an e-Book? Instead think about the audience you will serve. More targeted works well. People who want something quick and easy that will save them time and money - another audience. The best one so far in the untapped Internet or Online audience. Mostly small business people, they are eager to buy what they need to make their life or business more enjoyable, profitable, and easy.

Right now, think of your one or two preferred audiences, and keep their profile of their needs, complaints, or problems as well as their picture by your workstation. Then you will write the book your pre-sold audience already wants!

Mistake 4. You don’t automate your business.

As a newbie or non-techie, at first you may resist learning how to do this. Three years ago I knew nothing about the net, and today I’ve published five e-Books on Internet marketing and e-Book writing and publishing. You can too, little by little.

Since each book will not bring you landslides of profit, think about limiting your small priced books. Or, bundle them so that each sale is around $20 and up.

Offer your e-Book for sale through an 800 number. One with excellent service is MRC business Support at 800-366-5596. Set up a link for people to download your book. Two companies to investigate are Clickbank.com and Paypal.com.

Delegate some of this work to your computer assistant. Contact your local high schools and technical schools where Online geniuses live. And, the cost is nominal in comparison to the results.

Mistake 5. You don’t have a title that sells well.

A good title is short, clear, and clever. The best title includes your book’s number one benefit. Use words your audience can relate to. Even cliches are OK for book titles. Instead of “How to Market Online,” offer a title like a Web site headline: “Quadruple your Monthly Book Income - Market Online.”

Brainstorm a list of your possible titles with associates through a small marketing survey. Ask them to vote from 1-10 and offer their own title ideas that would make them reach into their wallets and pay $15-20 or more.

The e-Book earning curve while short is important for all writers to conquer. It’s easier when you contact a professional coach or take a teleclass to inform yourself. Stop making e-Book mistakes so you can earn the money you deserve.

We Met Online! Stories of Married Catholics Who Met Their Spouses On the Internet by by Anthony J. Buono and Stephen Weisenbach, eds.
As Written Publishing, 1413464653, $21.99

Is Internet “dating” good for the soul? It’s not something I’ve done personally, yet I know people who have tried it, albeit through secular means. One friend’s experience did not end well, another’s will result in her first face-to-face meeting, and eventually marriage. Having volunteered my services to an organization dedicated to preventing cyberstalking, I can tell you the Internet romance machine has malfunctioned at times - “malfunctioned” more appropriate to describing a train wreck than a simple computer virus.

Yet, reading the book WE MET ONLINE!, an anthology of Internet pairing success stories which some may discern more as a grand advertisement for Catholic matching service Ave Maria Singles, a glimmer of hope is injected into the prospect of finding a life mate online — for Catholics, it is a rather strong one, endorsed in the book’s foreword by Father C. John McCloskey III.

“Long-distance relationships can work. They have for centuries,” McCloskey writes. “Obviously the couple will have to move near one another, if not before, then certainly after the wedding. But the beauty of Ave Maria Singles or for that matter old-fashioned letter writing with paper and ink (remember that?) is that it allows the “dating” couple to really explore what matters by exchanging many, many messages over a period of time. This truly allows the “inner you” to be revealed until the moment comes for the face-to-face meeting.” Such words help to dissolve the sometimes negative aura surrounding the Internet, and the twenty-five stories following this foreword affirm that faithful, single Catholics in pursuit of a married vocation can find success in the proper environment.

The testimonials from the now married couples in WE MET ONLINE! evidence a varied membership at AMS. Ages range from early 20s to late 50s, some members are widowed or divorced and awaiting annulment, while others (including a few approaching middle age) have never married. There are members with young children, people with medical conditions, and still others living abroad who were willing to look beyond their home country for a mate (the story of Mairead and Tim is especially evident of the power of love, as one mate is willing to migrate from the US to Australia).

For all the differences among the people represented in WE MET ONLINE!, there is some common ground - all turned to God for help in their search for a spouse, all were directed in some fashion to AMS (whether through Anthony Buono’s appearances on EWTN or ads in Catholic magazines), and all had one thing specifically in mind: marriage to a like-minded, faithful Catholic. WE MET ONLINE! makes it clear that AMS is not a dumping ground for personal ads or casual contact; a goal is set. Reading WE MET ONLINE!, we learn some people had to wait more than two years to reach this goal, yet the end result was well worth the wait.

Is WE MET ONLINE! worth the read, however? For the discouraged Catholic wading through a sea of frogs to find that prince/princess, Buono and Weisenbach’s collection serves as an inspirational tool, that with faith in God and the technology He brings happiness can result. Readers already enjoying the fruits of a happy Catholic marriage, who have no need directly for AMS, may look upon WE MET ONLINE! as a collection of light, romantic vignettes. What would be interesting, for all readers, however, would be a follow-up volume revisiting the same twenty-five couples in five or ten years. As each couple represented in the book has been married three years or less, to see a strong rate of continued success in their marriages would make for an even stronger advertisement for this organization.

Using this method you will be able to find the best domain name,
host and graphics to generate huge profits with your eBusiness

Domain Name

A domain name is the word used for the actual website address.
When someone keys in the domain name they will find your
website. It is important that every e-Book you write and has a
new and different domain name. This makes you e-Book stay in the
memory of the customer and makes it a far more professional
looking.

Your domain name must describe what your e-Book is about. For
example if your e-Book was about building garden sheds, you
should have a domain name like www.buildingardensheds.com . You
might notice that my domain has “.com” at the end. I would
recommend this as it looks a lot more professional than
www.buildingardensheds.co.uk

There is one main way where you can search for a domain name.
You first need to come up with phrases and words that help to
describe the e-Book. So our main word would be “Garden shed”,
while other words could be building, creating etc.

The next step you need to take is go to the website Checkdomain
Then just type some ideas in the search engine and see are these
domains available. Try a whole bunch of different domains like:

www.buildagardenshed.com www.build-a-garden-shed.com
www.yourowngardenshed.com www.your-own-garden-shed.com
www.guide-to-building-garden-shed.com

As you can see it’s a lot easier to read the domain with the
hyphens, therefore if your domain is more than two words long, I
recommend using the hyphen.

Once you have found a good domain name that has not already
been registered (checkdomain will tell you this), you can sign
up for that domain. There are a huge amount of domain registrars
which you can sign up with.

Over the years though, I have found that the easiest way is to
sign up the domain with your web hosting company. Therefore I
would recommend when you are registering for your hosting
company to sign up for a domain name also.

Hosting

For your website to be viewable on the internet you must have a
hosting company. This is effectively renting web-space. We will
then make our sales website and upload to our new web hosting
server. Don’t panic though, ill show you how to upload it in due
course.

Choosing the right hosting company isn’t easy, as I myself have
found out in the past. I would certainly be well aware of the
“too good to be true” web-hosting company’s. Some company’s can
turn out to be very unreliable.

We need a hosting service with excellent uptime (the website is
up and running 24/7). There is no point having a sales website
when no one can see it.

The software that I will be recommending later on, will require
your hosting company to have the following specifications

24/7 ftp access MySQL Perl 4.0 or higher PHP 4.3 .x(or higher)

So you can check your potential web-hosting company to see if it
has those specifications. One of the best tips I’ve ever
received from an e-Book is from an immense e-Book publisher
called Richard Adams In his chapter on web hosting, he mentioned
that he lived in the UK but since most of his potential
customers lived in the US it would be a lot better to have a US
based hosting company. This means that if someone from the US
goes into your website it will run smoother and faster coming
from a US based hosting company.

You’re probably saying to yourself, “how am I going to find a
good web hosting company”. This is where a very handy website
called tophosts comes in. They have a huge database of
web-hosting services. If you go to the ecommerce hosting
section, it gives a list of the top ecommerce hosting services
and, trust me, they are all pretty good.

As I mentioned earlier Mr Adams mentioned a website called
host4profit in his e-Book. It was the first hosting service I
ever used and I still use it today as it’s extremely reliable
and designed for e-Book sales sites. The website supplies
unlimited autoresponders, newsletters and a site creation tool.
It also supplies unlimited resell rights for a number of e-Books.

Now here is the great thing about host4profit. They charge a
monthly hosting fee of around £30 dollars. This is reasonably
good although I have never actually paid a monthly fee to them.
The hosting company offers you ten dollars for every person you
recommend to them that signs up, so if you recommend three
people in a month your service is free.

If you’re actually asking yourself how can you get people to
sign-up, its quite easy. E-Books contain hyperlinks so all you
do is recommend the service in your e-Book and if a person
clicks the link host4profit and then signs up then you will be
paid.

I am not only recommending this hosting company because I’m
getting it for free. I am recommending it because it’s the best
hosting account for someone that is going to run an e-Book sales
site and furthermore I want to offer you the chance of getting a
quality hosting service for free.

Host4profit will also set up your domain name for you, so
register straight away at host4profit and don’t forget to
register for their affiliate programme.

Host4profit

Graphics

Graphics are an essential part of the jigsaw when creating an
e-Book site. They are similar to the domain name, in that it
promotes a much more professional image. You will be very
surprised by how much quality graphics can increase sales.

This doesn’t mean that you overload your website with graphics.
The more graphics you have on your page the longer it takes to
load. If a website takes too long to load when a potential
customer clicks into it, it will result in loss of sales. The
customer just gets bored waiting for your website to load and
just clicks back out. Here’s what graphics a sales website
should have

* A Logo * A Header Image * An e-Book Image * Buy now image

Personally I recommend using at least three out of four of
these graphics. Most of my sales websites contain a header
image, an e-Book image further down and a buy now image. This is
actually compulsory (I’ll explain this in more detail in step 6).

A logo

A logo is placed at the top of a sales page to attract the
attention of the customer and also to give it a professional
edge. A well designed logo attracts the attention of the
customer, while promoting the domain name, which in turn
describes the e-Book subject matter.

An e-Book Image

An e-Book cannot be touched or felt. An e-book image is a
graphic that makes an e-Book more real. It gives your book a
personality. I consider the e-Book image an absolute necessity.
You cannot skip over this.

An e-Book image improves sales considerably. I found this out
the hard way when I brought out an e-Book and decided not to
have an e-Book cover. For the first three weeks I only sold 11
copies, I then decided to pay $97 dollars for an e-Book image
from a website.

In the first week with the new image I sold 26 e-Books. That
worked out at $320 for yours truly. Without the image I made
$180 in three weeks. See where I’m coming from, Pay the $97 for
the e-Book image and you’ll make it back in the first week plus
profit. So I’ll say it again.

You must include an eBook image with your sales website

A Header Image

A header image is positioned at the top of the webpage in a
rectangular shape. Like the e-Book cover, it is extremely
beneficial to your sales page. It makes the sales page look much
more presentable. A header image should contain a description of
your product, web address and images.

Remember when a potential customer enters your sales site; the
first thing he/she will see is the header image. If this is
appealing enough to the customer they will then decide to read
the rest of the sales letter. You can create a header yourself
but I recommend paying someone to do it for you. It will
probably look far superior to your own design.

It will roughly cost the same amount as an e-Book image. Don’t
panic though, some company’s offer complete packages for
reasonable prices which I will explain in the next two pages.

A “buy now” Image

A “buy now” image is rather simple really. It is just a graphic
that replaces a blue text saying “click here”. It looks a lot
better and is bigger than normal text. It is also easy to find
when a potential customer decides to buy the e-Book; he can just
click on the image. Generally you can get “buy now” images for
free. One image should do you for everything. You can download
these images from plenty of sources on the internet.

Galileo, Darwin, and Hawking: The Interplay of Science, Reason, and Religion
Phil Dowe
Grand Rapids, Mich. William B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 2005.
205 pages. $21 paperback.

Sixteen hundred years ago, Augustine decided that the best model for the science-and-religion interplay was one of interaction and in Galileo, Darwin, and Hawking, philosopher of science and religion Phil Dowe argues that pattern continues today.

In his praiseworthy book, Dowe offers up four views of the science-and-religion relationship: naturalism, religious science, independence and interactivity. The first two brand the relationship as uncomplimentary, the third as unrelated, and the latter which Dowe favors sees religion and science as harmonious and dependent. He backs up his findings with detailed accounts of the history and philosophy of science-and-religion.

Dowe also reveals that ancient Christian belief made a single God the author of two books: the book of Scripture and the book of nature, which must correspond with each other. Augustine harmonized them. He counseled Christians to read scripture literally except where it conflicts with science, and then to interpret it metaphorically. Moreover, he advised reading Scripture as a spiritual work, not as science.

Conflict arises only when one book is exalted, the other demonized. If both receive equal recognition, either they serve separate functions, as in Stephen Jay Gould’s non-overlapping magisteria, or they mutually benefit each other, as Dowe argues clearly and logically in this book.

In Dowe’s first case study, Galileo is placed under house arrest by the Inquisition for promulgating Copernicus’ idea that Earth revolves around the sun. Surely, this is conflict. Yet, Dowe notes, the Vatican’s need for a better calendar and, therefore, a more accurate cosmology inspired Copernicus’ work, which he dedicated to the Pope. Moreover, this discord lay not between religion and science, but between sciences Aristotle vs. Copernicus for Augustine had harmonized Scripture with Aristotelian science.

More generally, the idea that God created people in the divine image rational and capable of governing inspired early science. Rational people can discover the workings of God’s rational world. As Dowe argues, governing requires power and scientific knowledge of nature increases power; therefore, humans should pursue science. These ideas gave early scientists the optimism and impetus to engage in science. Dowe claims the subsequent success of science supports the thesis that we do, in fact, share in the divine image.

Religion motivated Darwin, Dowe’s second case. As a student at Cambridge, Darwin studied William Paley’s Natural Theology, a design argument for the existence of God, and wrote On the Origin of Species in part to refute it. Yet, many scientists including Darwin think God and evolution compatible.

In evaluating Hawking, Dowe shows how even atheism is a way science and religion interact. The big bang gives the universe a beginning, reviving an old argument for the existence of God. Moreover, discovery that the universe is fine-tuned for the existence of life generates a new design argument. These God-promoting ideas, Dowe writes, drive the development of the “Hartle-Hawking no-boundary condition,” wherein the universe has no beginning and thus needs no creator. To avoid evoking God to explain the fine-tuning, other cosmologists hypothesize about the existence of multiple universes. According to Dowe, atheism drives an amazing amount of contemporary science, from Richard Dawkins’ biology to Hawking’s cosmology.

And Dowe is right. Partition between the two fields seems unlikely. Science is used to support religion, and religion or lack thereof stimulates science. Galileo, Darwin, and Hawking is worth pondering in all its detail.
